About AfriKin

AfriKin is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit cultural institution dedicated to advancing African and diasporic art, fashion, food, scholarship, and cultural exchange. Based in Miami, AfriKin serves as a global platform connecting continental Africa with the African diaspora in the Americas through exhibitions, research, public programs, and community engagement.

Founded in 2015, AfriKin was established to address a critical need for sustained cultural infrastructure that reflects the lived realities, histories, and creative practices of Global Africa. Our work operates at the intersection of art, education, cultural diplomacy, and community development, positioning African and diasporic narratives as foundational to the cultural identity of South Florida and the global cultural economy.

AfriKin’s mission is to cultivate, present, and preserve African and diasporic cultural knowledge across multiple disciplines. We are committed to creating platforms that support artists, designers, chefs, scholars, and cultural practitioners while shaping long-term cultural equity, representation, and economic opportunity.

What We Do

AfriKin operates across five integrated institutional platforms:

AfriKin Art Fair:

An internationally recognized art fair dedicated to contemporary African and diasporic art. The fair presents museum-quality exhibitions, curated projects, public dialogues, and cross-institution collaborations during Miami Art Week, serving as a premier global convening space for artists, curators, collectors, and scholars.

Maison AfriKin:

AfriKin’s permanent headquarters and cultural home located at the Scott Galvin Center in North Miami. Maison AfriKin functions as a year-round site for exhibitions, performances, lectures, educational programs, and community convening, establishing a lasting cultural landmark for Global Africa in South Florida.

African Fashion Week Miami:

A leading international fashion platform dedicated to African and diasporic designers. African Fashion Week Miami showcases contemporary fashion, textile innovation, and cultural identity through runway presentations, exhibitions, industry talks, and global partnerships.

Taste of AfriKin:

AfriKin’s culinary arts platform celebrating African and diasporic food cultures. Taste of AfriKin centers ancestral knowledge, contemporary culinary innovation, and food sovereignty through chef collaborations, cultural dinners, public tastings, and educational experiences.

Global Africa Programming:

AfriKin develops year-round public scholarship, youth engagement, artist mentorship, mental wellness, and professional development programs that support African and diasporic cultural practitioners and communities across the Americas.

Why AfriKin Matters

Miami is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the United States and one of the largest African diaspora regions in the Americas. As Miami continues to emerge as a global cultural capital, AfriKin plays a central role in shaping how African and diasporic culture is represented, preserved, and understood within the city’s cultural infrastructure.

AfriKin functions as both a cultural platform and an intellectual institution, producing not only exhibitions and events, but also research, critical writing, archives, and long-term cultural strategy. Our multidisciplinary model recognizes that culture is not limited to one medium, but exists across art, fashion, food, and lived experience.

Leadership

AfriKin is led by its founder and CEO, Alfonso D. Brooks, a cultural diplomat with over thirty years of experience in international cultural exchange, arts leadership, and community development across the Americas and beyond. His work centers on building cultural institutions, fostering transnational collaboration, and advancing African and diasporic representation within global cultural systems.

Global Recognition and Reach

Over the past eleven years, AfriKin has presented programs representing more than thirty countries across Africa and the global diaspora. AfriKin’s work has received institutional recognition from major media platforms and cultural organizations including The New York Times, NBC, ABC, Deco Drive, the City of North Miami, and the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau.

AfriKin continues to serve as a flagship institution for African and diasporic art, fashion, food, and cultural scholarship in South Florida, operating as a trusted platform for artists, designers, chefs, scholars, cultural leaders, and communities worldwide.

AfriKin Scholarship Fund

Looking for a way to give back? Look no further than the AfriKin Scholarship fund! By attending AfriKin events, you can help local South Florida students further their education in the arts.

AfriKin fiscal programs are fundraisers towards AfriKin Evening of Purpose. This signature event takes place during Miami Art Week/Art Basel Miami Beach and is the culmination of a year's worth of preparation and fundraising by the AfriKin Foundation.

The Evening of Purpose is more than just our VIP opening for the art fair – it's an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people in our community. For each artwork sold, part of the proceeds will go towards funding scholarships for students in South Florida pursuing careers in the arts. That means that every time you purchase a work of art, you're helping someone achieve their dreams.

How gratifying it is to be socially responsible in making a difference. Join us at the upcoming AfriKin events and see for yourself the incredible impact your contribution can have. Together, we can help local youth pursue their passions and build a brighter future for us all.
